The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid

Disclaimer: I received The Little Mermaid Legacy Collection CD as a member of the Entertainment New Media Network.  No further compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

Walt Disney Records celebrates The Little Mermaid’s 25th anniversary with the release The Little Mermaid Legacy Collection.  Composer Alan Menken said, “The greatest thing about what we do is create something that works in the moment, but also stands the test of time.  For the last 25 years, a generation has grown up with ‘The Little Mermaid’ and it has so greatly influenced them. I hear all the time it’s the soundtrack of so many people’s lives, and that’s a thrilling thing.” Wait...has it really been 25 years? I remember watching the movie and singing along to the songs over and over when it first came out.  Now, I get to enjoy The Little Mermaid with my daughter.  There is just something about the songs that evokes a feeling of happiness!

The Little Mermaid collection features the songs and score from the film by Oscar®-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman on Disc One, twelve work tapes and song demos performed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman on Disc Two, and a collectible 20-page booklet.  Also included are liner notes by Alan Menken, John Musker (Co-writer, Director and Producer, “The Little Mermaid”), and Chris Montan (President of Walt Disney Music).  According to Menken, “The Legacy Collection reorganizes the material and allows the listener to be able to draw more out of it and enjoy it on another level.  Technology has improved over the decades and going back to the masters results in better representations of the material on these CDs.”

Commenting on Disc Two’s song demos Menken adds, “I hope listeners experience some of our memories and I hope they take away, as I do, a lot of re-discoveries.  The demos of some the song moments take the listener through the process on how they were developed, understanding what the authors wanted to communicate, and ultimately leading into what the song became.”

I was given a The Little Mermaid Legacy Collection to enjoy with my kids.  You too can have one of your own.  All you have to do is leave me a comment with your favorite Little Mermaid song.

WALT DISNEY RECORDS ANNOUNCES

THE LEGACY COLLECTION

I recently received three of these albums:  The Lion King, Mary Poppins, and Sleeping Beauty. I must say I was amazed with the artwork created by Lorelay Bove, a visual development artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios.  The illustrations within the album celebrate Disney's rich heritage and bring back fond childhood memories. Each album comes with documentary content that tells the story behind each music.
